I recently completed my Bachelor of Science through the University of Manitoba, majoring in genetics with a minor in chemistry. I have been interested in science since high school, but I did not have my mind made up on my career path until much later into university. I knew I wanted to be able to help people and, combined with my interest in science, that is what sparked my interest in the health care field. As a pharmacist, I hope to make positive impacts on individuals’ health and lives while increasing the public’s overall science literacy. Throughout my time in university and high school, I volunteered with different organizations such as St. Boniface Hospital, UMSU, Science Rendezvous, CanU, and Let’s Talk Science. I am currently on the coordinating team for Girls in Science for the second time. This is an event put on by Let’s Talk Science, promoting careers in STEM to girls in middle school. <image:caption>Ms. Sharshonov has had a passion for the sciences since a very young age. When she first began her studies at the University of Manitoba back in 2014, she was immediately drawn to chemistry courses such as biochemistry and organic chemistry. In her second year, she became interested in pharmacology and the clinical application of such chemicals, inspired by a close friend that was studying pharmacy at that time. The study content aligned perfectly with her interest. Despite the challenging and lengthy path to becoming a pharmacist, it was a decision she would never regret. The program itself is made up of such a wide range of courses and diverse experiences that pertain to the pharmacy field. Ms. Sharshonov had graduated from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba in May 2020 and immediately began working in a small independent pharmacy. Her favourite aspect of this profession is the close relationship she builds and maintains with all of her patients. They look up to her for her expertise and guidance because she and others like her are experts in therapeutics and medication management. She was able to realize she can make a difference in people’s health and lives. It is absolutely true what they say, pharmacists are one of the most trusted health care professionals.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My name is Bryden Bukich and I am a 5th year Kinesiology student at the University of Manitoba. I have been steadily involved around health sciences over the last several years and hope to continue along that path after graduation. From working different placements such as Pan Am Clinic, St. Boniface Hospital and now the First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba (FNHSSM), in addition to University placements in motor control and neuromusculoskeletal research and Indigenous land-based education research, I have had exposure to clinical and research-related sectors of health sciences that have intrigued me to pursue a career in medicine. I hope to apply to medical school in the fall of 2021, and in doing so, build upon the knowledge and experiences from these placements and opportunities. I have also been involved with Indigenous populations, particularly through placements at Indigenous Health (WRHA), my current position (FNHSSM), and volunteer positions such as coaching the NAIG U14 Mens Basketball team, mentoring Indigenous students at our University, and as student senator within our faculty. I love to balance these commitments by playing a variety of sports and athletic activities, travelling, spending time with my two dogs, and my friends.</image:caption>

I aspire to enter med school and pursue my dream of studying medicine in an attempt to help people and bring smiles to their faces. Having parents from STEM, I was always encouraged to ask questions during lectures since that’s the foundation for understanding any subject. Fortunately, their advice not only helped make my base strong in science but also gave me the freedom to be curious and ask numerous questions increasing my interest in science even more. I would love to spread awareness about inclusivity in the science community and help others find their passion for science as well.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Katrina is a second year Arts & Sciences student at Canadian Mennonite University. She serves as Vice President Communications on CMU Student Council, sings with CMU Singers and Women’s Chorus, and was selected as one of the school’s Leader Scholars in 2020. This is her fourth year with Project Pulse - she feels delighted to transition into a mentorship role for the 21/22 season after leading the executive team as President over the past two years and serving as Graphics Designer back in 2019. She is motivated to apply her experiences with the organization to supporting current members of the team as they bring innovative ideas to the table and prepare for yet another year of meaningful online programming. Aside from her love of studying in sunny libraries and warm cups of tea, Katrina enjoys baking, folding mini paper stars, and spending time with friends. Katrina has always admired the complexity and beauty of interdisciplinary study and career paths. She hopes that PPW will continue to bridge the gaps in accessibility to health sciences resources to equip and inspire students from all backgrounds to discover what they are passionate about, too. In her free time, Ella enjoys improving her cooking skills, watching classic movies, and hanging out with family and friends. This year, along with volunteering, she plans to become even more active in her school community by participating in different clubs and sports. Through Project Pulse, Ella is eager to delve deeper into the health sciences and gain a new perspective from individuals who have experienced the field first-hand. She also looks forward to working with a strong team of like-minded individuals, and creating a positive environment for everyone. She is honoured to serve as President for this year’s Project Pulse season—when she joined the team last year as Professional Relations Director, Rhea did not anticipate the profound effect this organization would have on her, as she was able to help increase accessibility to health sciences resources. She hopes to expose more high school students to the purposeful opportunities that Project Pulse offers, and is eager to witness the great things that this year’s Executive Team will accomplish! Rhea has participated in the Manitoba Schools Science Symposium since Grade 7 and got selected to represent Canada in May at the Canada-Wide Science Fair. Attending Shad this summer, a national STEAM and entrepreneurship program, further strengthened her passion for the sciences. She is an active member of her school community as a leader of the Green Team and Youth in Philanthropy clubs, editor-in-chief of SJR’s newspaper and literary magazine, and a member of Student Council. Rhea is heavily involved in debating and public speaking, attending the Nationals every year since grade 8 and qualifying for the World Individual Debate and Public Speaking Championships in April, where she was a finalist. She also learns Bharatanatyam dancing, an Indian classical dance, which allows her to remain connected to her culture. Rhea has enjoyed organizing Sustaining Strength of Seniors since she started it in January, a group of elderly that she gathers every week for discussions and activities to help them overcome their social isolation. In her free time, she takes pleasure in reading fictional books, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends. Contact: winnipeg@projectpulsecanada.com</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kristine is a first year student in the Faculty of Science and in the Food Nutrition and Health Program in the University of British Columbia. She had graduated from the International Baccalaureate program in 2020 at Kelvin High School. Being the third year interacting with Project Pulse Winnipeg; first year as a participant and two years as an executive team member, her goal is to improve skills and seek for more knowledge as she has a goal to pursue a career in health sciences, with interests majoring in dietetics and minoring in psychology. Outside of school, she volunteers in the summer at Cancer Care and Folklorama Winnipeg. During her high school career, she helps the community such as participating in fundraisers. And she is also helping out with Holiday Breakfast, a christmas event that takes place at Kelvin where the school provides breakfast, activities, and presents for an elementary school in the city. These have shown her how important communication is, as well as to be more caring of other people. With an observation as a participant to Project Pulse Winnipeg’s workshop, it was great to see that there were professionals who were available to answer questions that help many students when they are unsure. With this said, knowing that some of these answers are so important to many students, she is very thrilled to be part of the executive team of Project Pulse Winnipeg again with other members of the online team! She is very excited to bring inspirations to others and hopes that the health sciences education brought by Winnipeg Project Pulse can motivate others to follow their dreams. <image:caption>Sachin Katyal received his B.Sc. (Biochemistry) from the University of Alberta and received his Ph.D. (Oncology) at the Cross Cancer Institute and the University of Alberta. His post-doctoral training, at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in the area of DNA damage and repair in neurodevelopment and neuro-oncology was done in the lab of Dr. Peter McKinnon; work that led to publications in internationally-renowned journals such as Nature, Nature Neuroscienceand EMBO J. In 2013, Dr. Katyal began his independent academic research position at the University of Manitoba and CancerCare Manitoba where he is an Assistant Professor within the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics (D-PT) and, a Senior Scientist within the Research Institute of Oncology and Hematology (RIOH). Dr. Katyal’s research is CIHR- and TFRI-funded; he is the recipient of the CIHR Institute of Cancer Research 2014 Early Career Award in Cancer Research, a CIHR New Investigator award and a TFRI New Investigator Award. He serves on several scientific review committees for international academic journals and grant review panels. More recently, Sachin established industrial partnerships, which have facilitated the development of innovative technology and methodology to accelerate his DNA damage repair research program. These were instrumental for his recently-funded CFI JELF award to develop a novel high-throughput genotoxicity and drug screening facility to understand and identify new therapies against brain tumours and leukemia. Sachin is also actively involved in trainee development, mentorship and career progression through various University-wide initiatives, courses and workshops.</image:caption>

He is currently researching mitochondrial diseases in the Cardiac Engineering and Tissue Regeneration Laboratory at the Research Centre. Sandeep also cares for the environment, and apart from consuming anything by Aldo Leopold, has established his school’s Environmental Club. He was also 1 of 150 students selected nationwide for a National Forum in Ottawa in 2017, based on an essay he wrote about Canadian environmental issues and solutions. Further, he passionately discusses the environment, among other things, in the Winnipeg South Youth Council. Sandeep loves helping others through his volunteer positions at St. Amant and St. Boniface Hospital. He was dedicated by the House of Commons of Canada for his community involvement in 2017. In his spare time, Sandeep loves reading (just about anything), playing the piano, and watching movies. He looks forward to an exciting year for Project Pulse and an unforgettable conference in 2019.</image:caption>

He is passionate about the health sciences, and because of that, he is planning to study in the nursing faculty at the University of Manitoba in the near future. This is Sean’s first year in the executive team as the Graphics Designer, and he is very thrilled to be part of Project Pulse 2020. Sean has been helping out at St. Joseph’s Nursing home as a recreational volunteer. He has been in the Graphics course of his school for two years now, and it quickly became one of his favourite hobbies, along with basketball, playing the piano, and photography. Sean is also a member of his school’s club, Sisler High Against Cancer. He was one of the photographers during the club’s Spartan Shave event. He hopes to create a whole variety of eye-catching designs for the team this year, so that more people can be inspired to be a part of Project Pulse 2020. Sean has been a consistent honour roll student for his whole academic life. He was born in the Philippines, and his family moved to Canada a few years ago to seek out better opportunities. He used to be the Student Council President of his middle school, and he has also been a part of many academic competitions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kristine is a grade 12 International Baccalaureate student at Kelvin High School. She enjoys many science classes where they taught her how the world works around her. Being the second year interacting with Project Pulse Winnipeg; first year as a participant and this year as an executive team member, her goal is to improve skills and seek for more knowledge as she has a goal to pursue a career in health sciences, with great interest in dietetics and nutritions. Outside of school, she volunteers in the summer at Cancer Care and Folklorama. During the school year, she helps the community such as participating in fundraisers. And she is also helping out with Holiday Breakfast, a Christmas event that takes place at Kelvin where the school provides breakfast, activities, and presents for an elementary school in the city. These have shown her how important communication is, as well as to be more caring of other people. With an observation as a participant to Project Pulse Winnipeg’s workshop last year, it was great to see that there were professionals who were available to answer questions that help many students when they are unsure. With this said, knowing that some of these answers are so important to many students, she is very thrilled to be part of the executive team of Project Pulse Winnipeg 2020, and is hoping to help more students! She is very excited to bring inspirations to others and hopes that the health sciences education brought by Winnipeg Project Pulse can motivate others to follow their dreams.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Winnica is a fourth year student at the University of Calgary, pursuing a Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) with a major in Biomedical Science. Winnica was born in the Philippines and immigrated to Canada in 2002. As a first-generation Canadian, she was challenged to be resourceful at a young age in the face of an environment with limited resources. Winnica founded Project Pulse Winnipeg (PPW) in 2015 because she saw it as an opportunity to increase educational and co-curricular opportunities for students who may be disadvantaged due to uncontrollable factors like their socioeconomic status or upbringing. PPW is now entering its fifth year, and Winnica is always amazed to see how much it continues to impact high school students across Winnipeg every year. Winnica’s favourite part about working with the PPW team is being able to mentor and witness the growth of high school students from a variety of backgrounds - empowering them to dream big and reminding them that there are no limits to what they can accomplish. As part of her involvement with PPW, Winnica became a recipient of the national 2016 High School Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Scholarship and 2017 Terry Fox Humanitarian Award. While she is grateful for these opportunities to receive financial help for her education, she believes that accolades will always be secondary to the intrinsic fulfillment she feels from giving back to her community in purposeful ways. Outside of her work with PPW, Winnica is a Community Advisor in residence at UCalgary and a passionate advocate for leadership development and public speaking. Through all that she does, Winnica is always looking for fulfilling and purpose-driven experiences in pursuit of continuous personal growth and lifelong learning. In doing so, she encourages others to never lose sight of their purpose, remain grounded in gratitude, and lead with kindness.</image:caption>
